6. Brain, Remote Infarct - Low Power
Microscopic appearance of the remote (cavitary) infarct seen in the last image. Note that the microscopic section traverses the cavitary infarct in two places, but the cavities are connected elsewhere. Also of note is the thin cortical ribbon under the pia mater, which is not part of the infarct, because of its meningeal blood supply. The term for this is "subpial sparing". In contrast, in a contusion, there is no subpial sparing.
