9. Brain, Acute Infarct - High Power
These are acutely necrotic pyramidal neurons from the infarct in the left lateral frontal lobe of this patient. The image also contains non-necrotic neurons for comparison. Non-necrotic neurons have amphophilic cytoplasm and a vesicular nucleus, with a nucleolus sometimes visible. Acutely necrotic neurons have eosinophilic cytoplasm and a hyperchromatic, pyknotic nucleus with no visible nucleolus.
