1. Peripheral Nerve, Cross Section - PAS Stain
The patient's nerve biopsy is on the left half of the screen. The PAS (periodic acid Schiff) stain highlights normal myelin. This low power view, at which only myelinated fibers can be seen, shows how rare the myelinated fibers in our patient's biopsy are, indicating depopulation. The section on the right half of this image, for comparison, is that of a relatively well-populated segment of peripheral nerve. What is the significance of the patient's clinical presentation? Compare with the typical clinical presentation of a patient with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Answer
