6. Neurofibroma - Low Power
Neurofibroma is the other type of nerve sheath neoplasm. In this low power view, characteristic features of the neurofibroma are seen, including thin, "wavy" nuclei, and fairly regular distribution of cells. The background is fibrillar and usually amphophilic, although it appears pinkish here. Neurofibromas are generally benign and, like schwannomas, are most common in patients with neurofibromatosis. Neurofibromas diffusely expand the nerve in which they originate, while schwannomas grow adjacent to their nerve of origin.
