2. Diabetic Glomerulosclerosis - High Power
A variety of glomerular lesions may occur in diabetes mellitus.
Nodular glomerulosclerosis, very characteristic of diabetes, is seen
here. There is deposition of pink staining material in the mesangial
core of the glomeruli. This material appears in the form of nodules
seen at the periphery of the glomerular capillary tufts. The nodules
contain mesangial matrix material. In addition to nodular
glomerulosclerosis, the glomeruli also show diffuse thickening of the
basement membrane and a diffuse increase in the mesangial matrix.
