11. Acute Hemorrhagic Infarct, Small Intestine - Gross
At the time of autopsy, the small bowel demonstrates extensive areas of infarcted small intestine showing dark, hemorrhagic discoloration. Bowel infarction is an uncommon but serious disorder that imposes a 50-75% death rate, because the time between onset of symptoms, sepsis, and perforation is small. Older individuals are vulnerable because of pre-existing cardiac and vascular disease and abdominal surgery with adhesions. Bowel infarction is an important cause of an acute abdomen.
