11. Acute Hemorrhagic Infarct, Small Intestine - Gross
At the time of autopsy, the small bowel demonstrates extensive areas
of infarcted small intestine showing dark, hemorrhagic discoloration.
Bowel infarction is an uncommon but serious disorder that imposes a
50-75% death rate, because the time between onset of symptoms,
sepsis, and perforation is small. Older individuals are vulnerable
because of pre-existing cardiac and vascular disease and abdominal
surgery with adhesions. Bowel infarction is an important cause of an
acute abdomen. What are the causes of bowel infarction?
