14. Carcinoid of the Ileum - Gross
Autopsy specimen of ileum demonstrates three small, yellow-tan polyps
that measure about 2 cm in diameter. Carcinoid tumors that arise in
the ileum are frequently multicentric. Neuroendocrine cells are
normally dispersed along the length of the gastrointestinal tract
mucosa. Tumors of these cells are called carcinoids. The appendix is
the most common site of gut carcinoid tumors, followed by ileum,
rectum, stomach, and colon. Most clinically significant carcinoids
arise in the ileum. Tumors greater than 2cm can metastasize to the
regional lymph node and liver and produce a carcinoid syndrome. What
are the clinical features of carcinoid syndrome?
