Remember that SLE is a systemic disease. Multiple organ systems are affected. Although serositis is a fairly common occurrence in SLE, interstitial changes can also be present. The pleura, instead of being thin and transparent, is opaque, forming a whitish sheath over the lung surface. What is responsible for the opacity of the pleura? Answer
