5. HIV Encephalopathy - High Power
The microscopic picture of HIV encephalopathy consists of a
microglial nodule containing a multinucleated giant cell, as shown
here. Oligodendroglia, astrocytes, and macrophages proliferate as a
non-specific response to injury, forming microglial nodules.
Specificity for HIV-1 can be demonstrated utilizing an
immunoperoxidase stain; the antibody is applied to the tissue section
on the glass slide, and detection of the applied antibody occurs
through a colorimetric enzymatic assay. In this case, an antibody
specific for the p24 antigen of HIV was used to demonstrate the
antigen in the right photograph. How does this differ pathologically
from HIV-1 aseptic meningitis, which occurs 1 to 2 weeks after
seroconversion?
