9. Colon, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) - Gross
Cytomegalovirus infection of the colon presented in this patient as
patchy ulcerations and pseudomembrane formation. The ulcerations form
as a result of infection of the vascular endothelium with resulting
thrombosis and necrosis of the colonic epithelium as well as a direct
cytotoxic effect from infection of the epithelium by CMV. The green
color overlying the ulcers is a result of adherent fecal material
attached to ulcerated mucosa. How do CMV infections differ in
immunocompetent vs. immunosuppressed patients?
