RBCs

1. Additive solution units (AS-1 or Adsol). Nearly all units received from Bloodcare or outside blood centers will be collected in this medium. Volume = 320 ml. Shelf life = 42 days. Hematocrit = 55%. Much less viscous than CPDA-1 units, so flow faster and better for emergency transfusions. Not recommended for transfusion to neonates. Excess fluid can be spun off prior to issue if needed for babies or patients with congestive heart failure.

2. CPDA-1. Several units primarily intended for neonatal transfusion are collected by Bloodcare each week in this anticoagulant-preservative solution. Volume = 220ml. Shelf life = 35 days. Hematocrit = 80%. Preferred anticoagulant/preservative for patients with congestive heart failure to reduce volume.
